WESWOO / GUIDES
Independent commerce: design, development and operations
A practical reading guide, from choosing a platform to launching, operating and improving a store.
Choose your starting point
Follow a short reading sequence for your current project.
Starting a store: product and purchase foundations
Read through scope, navigation, product pages, checkout and measurement.
Moving a store: URLs, orders and performance
Map the migration before checking domains, orders and release performance.
Operations: connect exceptions and data
Connect support, automation, recovery, ERP and order-level analytics.
- Shopify Inbox Personalized Support: Post-Purchase Operations
- Flow foundations: triggers, conditions, actions and plans
- Advanced Flow: run logs, idempotency and recovery
- Webhook setup: verification, idempotency and recovery
- ERP integration: master data, stock and reconciliation
- GA4 setup: event coverage and order differences
Start with a practical self-check
Define the problem and acceptance evidence before choosing a theme change, an app or custom development.
Theme, app or custom development?
| Approach | Prefer it for | Verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Theme and editor | Layout, brand styling and product presentation that existing sections can support. | Replay real products on mobile and in the editor; check empty data, translation and theme upgrades. |
| Established app | A separate capability such as reviews, subscriptions or marketing with a suitable extension. | Verify plan eligibility, permissions, fees, uninstall effects and the pages actually supported. |
| Custom development or integration | Documented business rules and system connections that settings or apps cannot meet. | Define data ownership, failure recovery, maintenance, performance budgets and reversible acceptance checks. |
For hosted checkout, payments or backend permissions, verify supported extension points and plan eligibility first; theme styling cannot supply those capabilities.
Pre-launch checklist
Complete each check and retain evidence. Ticks last only for this page visit and reset on refresh.
Checked 0 / 8
Product, migration and GEO checks
Use these checks for product data, legacy URLs, brand claims and AI citations. Examples illustrate the process.
Choose metafields or metaobjects
Who owns the value?
Product or variant specifications normally fit metafields. Consider metaobjects for multi-field content referenced in several places.
Who maintains and reads it?
Record type, unit, language, source and maintenance responsibility. Check theme Liquid, Storefront API and admin access separately.
What happens when data changes?
Plan fallbacks for missing translations, empty values, removed references and publication state. Validate with isolated records before any production bulk change.
Check legacy URLs before and after a move
Build the map
Record source status, language, market, purpose and a relevant destination. Explain retention or retirement when no substitute exists.
Separate domains from paths
Treat primary, redirect and alias domains separately from path rules. Check valid sources, reserved paths, parameters and market-subfolder limits.
Verify and recover
Check responses, final destinations, canonicals, internal links and sitemaps. Save versions and reconcile orders and notifications across the cutover window.
Make brand claims and project metrics verifiable
Keep the entity and the date together
Record the entity, event, date and source for each claim. Track platform launch, merchant adoption, partnership and incorporation as separate events. Check the About page, case studies, translations and Organization markup before publishing a founding date.
Attribute each case to the people who did the work
Separate work you delivered, reviews supplied by clients and cases published by a platform. Name the brand, market or store, responsible party, scope, launch date and source. If a platform case identifies its implementation partner, credit that party.
Record the evidence behind each metric
For historical samples, record period, inclusion criteria, sample size, numerator, denominator and baseline. For lab tests, record page, device, network, tool version and script configuration, and separate them from field data. For single-project results, give the observation window, baseline and relevant concurrent changes.
Preserve original data and publish within its scope
Keep client source material, figures, units and attribution. Describe a single project or test in its own context. Define the start, finish and day type for timelines and the denominator and exceptions for coverage claims. Resolve missing evidence in the internal record before broadening a claim.
Compare language variants and rendered output
Use the same fact record to check headings, summaries, graphic labels and both language versions. Check raw HTML and visible text before and after animation so intermediate counters do not appear as the final metric. Compare structured data with the visible page.
Diagnose crawling and retest AI answers
Pick URLs by buyer task
Set the market, language and question first. Service pages explain scope and delivery, guides support decisions and checks, and cases substantiate specific experience. Use existing pages where they can answer the task. Add a standalone guide once the task and evidence justify it.
Verify access and indexing
Check HTTP, robots.txt, CDN rules, noindex, canonicals, language links and rendered content on the actual URLs. For moves, record old URLs, direct destinations, internal links and sitemaps. Use the search platform’s URL inspection to confirm indexing status.
Check crawlers by purpose
Separate search crawling, user-triggered fetches, training and controls for product-specific grounding. Verify request identity using published IP ranges or the provider’s documented method. A User-Agent alone does not establish the origin.
Track mentions, citations and product placements separately
Retest a fixed question and market in a fresh conversation. Keep platform, time, prompt, answer and cited URLs. Record brand, legal entity, cited domain and product placement separately. Run unbranded buyer questions before explicit brand checks.
Separate platform observations from business results
Track search reports, AI answers, identifiable referrals and qualified enquiries as separate measures. One answer can expose a mismatch. Use repeat observations under comparable conditions for trends. Google’s AI search eligibility follows normal indexing and snippet requirements. Record when you checked the source.
Four acceptance checks for Shopify AI product channels
Channel eligibility and activation
Record the market, channel, date and eligibility message. In Agentic, check Shopify Catalog and channel status for ChatGPT and Copilot. Google AI Mode and Gemini receive product data from the Google & YouTube sales channel or Merchant Center. Check Meta Catalog discovery and shoppable ad syncing separately.
Fields, variants and wholesale visibility
Sample mapped fields with and without a value. Check fallbacks, current and compare-at prices, and grouping by variant ID. Custom Catalog grouping takes precedence over Combined Listings. As a guest, test native B2B-only items, wholesale items hidden by an app or theme, and shared items that should show the retail price. Unlisted also affects sitemaps and search inside and outside the store.
Live placement and answer citations
Save Search preview for diagnosis. Repeat the same question on the live AI surface for the same market and currency. Record the product card, specifications, price, stock and citation URL separately. The preview and live channel can rank products differently.
Store entry, product selection and checkout
On a phone, follow the live recommendation to the store or channel checkout. Verify the selected specifications, variant added to cart, currency, shipping and purchase destination. ChatGPT uses the merchant’s online store checkout. Test other destinations against their active settings and record unavailable checks as pending.
Retest product or policy changes at three layers
Capture the storefront baseline at save time
Record the time, market, currency, SKU or policy URL, and old and new values. Check the product or policy page. For store information, also check /agents.md and /llms.txt on the main domain. Shopify provides these discovery files by default, with URL-specific templates able to override their output. robots.txt governs applicable open-web crawling. Channel settings govern Catalog delivery to activated channels.
Recheck admin output after processing
For product changes, review Channel mapping and target channel status. For policy changes, check the Knowledge Base source, Published state and public references. When switching to Manual, restore relevant links supplied by the previous source. The up-to-48-hour window applies to a requested Knowledge Base rescan. Record the status shown in admin.
Repeat a fixed question on the live surface
Save Search preview as a Catalog diagnostic, then test the live channel with the same market, currency and question. Check product placement, variant, price, stock, compatibility, cited URL and the purchase destination. Record preview and live results separately because channels can reorder results.
Keep one record for each channel
Record time, market, SKU or policy URL, change, admin status, storefront evidence, actual question, product card and citations. Track eligibility, field output, placement and checkout separately. Mark unavailable surfaces as untested and absent placements as not shown.
Turn case studies into acceptance questions
Trace a business problem into the interface and data, then apply the same checks to your project.
INIU · Specifications to cart
- Business problem
- Power, capacity, ports and device compatibility need to be compared quickly.
- Implementation described in the published case
- The case places core specifications in the main reading area and connects scenario entry points, filtering and mobile add-to-cart to the same product fields.
- Acceptance question for a new project
- Choose different specifications, colours and stock states. Do the list, product page and cart refer to the same sellable configuration?
Shokz UK · Scenarios and variants
- Business problem
- Shoppers first choose a sports or work range, then confirm colour, fit and accessories within a model.
- Implementation described in the published case
- The case separates scenario navigation from variants and keeps media, benefits and purchase controls tied to the current SKU.
- Acceptance question for a new project
- Switch colour and fit, then use the long-page purchase bar. Do imagery, price, benefit copy and cart variant remain consistent?
TERMINO · Content and commerce data
- Business problem
- A modular kitchen needs spatial and configuration guidance before estimate, showroom or project enquiry.
- Implementation described in the published case
- The case uses Framer for narrative and configuration, connecting module, price and availability data through Shopify Storefront API.
- Acceptance question for a new project
- Match the configuration summary to module records. If a commerce query fails, do explanations, contact paths and the chosen configuration remain usable?

Evaluate and Budget
Decide whether and how much to invest across platform upgrade, financing, and total cost.
Budget a Shopify headless storefront
Compare a theme rebuild and a headless storefront for the same market, scope and time horizon. Use this checklist to collect quotes and operating costs.
Liquid theme or separate frontend
Test the theme and apps for the same market, product range and purchase journey. Turn any unmet editing, interaction or integration requirements into prototype checks before committing to a separate frontend.
Four one-off workstreams
Price architecture and content modelling, UI design, frontend and Shopify API work, and integration and launch testing separately. Specify the templates, markets, accounts and checkout scope. Include redirects, data moves, analytics and rollback for a rebuild.
First-year running costs
Separate shared Shopify subscription and transaction costs. Check Oxygen or self-hosting costs against the chosen plan and runtime. Include CMS, search, app adaptations, monitoring and engineering support.
Compare totals over the same period
Add the build, fixed and usage charges, and internal editing and maintenance time. Use the same currency and tax basis for a 12- or 36-month comparison. Test products, accounts, checkout, crawlable content and editor workflows on the prototype.

Design and Storefront Build
Turn the brand into a storefront that can launch and pass acceptance, with emphasis on the mobile purchase path.
Bring the brand story onto the product page
Choose one featured product and connect the brand story to design, materials and use that shoppers can verify.
Pick a real design decision
Choose a material, construction detail or use case and explain which customer problem it addresses.
Give each image a question to answer
Use a close-up for texture, a familiar reference for scale and a scene that shows the product in use.
Separate brand, collection and campaign choices
Keep a common baseline for product photography. Give collections room for their own details and place campaign styling on campaign pages.
Try choosing a product on mobile
Ask someone unfamiliar with the brand to compare two products and find the differences, specifications and evidence behind their choice.

Development and Integrations
Architecture, APIs, and delivery capability beyond the theme: headless, deployment, master data, and choosing a development partner.
Locate a sync failure by state
Find where the state stopped before choosing retry, reconciliation or manual handling.
Nothing sent or subscription missing
Check shop, topic, scopes, API version and subscription state. Missing notification is not proof of no business change.
Delivery or verification failed
Check HTTPS, timeouts, raw request bytes and the correct secret. Unverified payloads stay outside business queues.
Acknowledged but the destination is unchanged
Check durable queues and consumers; separate receipt, processing and destination confirmation.
Duplicate, out of order or partly complete
Check Webhook ID, Event ID, business-action key and destination state. Replay only bounded operations that can be reconciled.

Plus, multi-store and markets
Separate single-store market configuration from organisational and data boundaries before planning domains, currencies, approvals and upgrades.
Choose one store or several before assessing Plus
Document organisational, commerce and data boundaries before selecting a plan.
Can one store manage the market differences?
With a shared catalogue and operating model, assess Markets configuration for regions, languages, catalogues and currencies first. Cross-border selling alone does not justify Plus or multiple stores.
Are entities or operations independent?
For multiple entities, check Plus eligibility for Markets business entities and payment requirements. Compare multiple stores where teams, catalogues or operations need separate boundaries.
Who owns cross-store data?
Plus expansion stores have separate data and settings; products and stock do not sync by default. Define ERP or app ownership, permissions, reconciliation and per-store fees.
Which requirements justify an upgrade?
B2B is available on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus with plan-specific capabilities. Assess advanced needs such as UI extensions in information, shipping and payment steps against total cost.

Single-store Markets launch checks
Validate catalogs, overrides, destination, checkout and refunds market by market.
Multilingual storefront launch checks
Verify content, distinct URLs, alternate versions and fulfilment by language and market.
B2B and Wholesale
Make wholesale and B2B procurement a configurable channel instead of building a second system.
Verify catalogs, volume pricing and payment on the first B2B order
Run a first order from two buying locations and check that access, price and payment records match the same transaction.
Confirm the company and buying location
Record the signed-in company, current buying location and visible catalog. Repeat the product and price check from a second location.
Count active market catalog assignments
Check the plan’s market catalog assignments. On Basic, Grow and Advanced, assigning one catalog to two active markets uses two assignments.
Test the minimum and the first price break
Try the minimum order, the first valid price break and a quantity just below it. Compare the actual unit price in the cart and checkout.
Reconcile invoices and funds received
Record the draft, payment terms and funds received. Use the order record to assign shipment, partial fulfillment and refunds.

SEO and GEO
Connect international search, mobile experience, and case evidence with brand facts and content discovery.
Shopify GEO acceptance checklist
Pick one target market and a set of real buying questions. Record evidence from public pages, channel settings and actual answers.
Sample four page types
Choose a collection, a product, the About page and a delivery or returns policy. Check the response, main content, canonical URL and reciprocal language links where applicable. Record crawl access and indexing status separately in Search Console.
Verify brand and product facts
Check the brand name, specifications, units, fit, price, stock, delivery and returns. Link product information to the relevant policies. Match the brand identity to public profiles and attributed cases.
Check product channels separately
Record eligibility, fields and variants, live placement, and checkout separately for each target market and SKU. Open the four acceptance checks below to capture admin and storefront evidence.
Retest with the same questions
Keep the platform, market, date, question and actual citation URLs. Record brand mentions, linked citations and product placements separately. Compare changes alongside search and referral data.

Accept the mobile purchase path, checkout, and measurement on real devices before blaming traffic or promises.
Shopify DTC Case Evidence and Operations
Read DTC case studies with an evidence frame that separates original figures, observation windows, and repeatable actions.
Brand evidence and content maintenance
Brand recognition rests on verifiable services, attributable cases and consistent information. Content and structured-data fixes improve communication; citations, rankings and enquiries need separate observation.
Check brand facts
Link scope, contact, regions and policies to actual pages. Preserve original client figures, dates and attribution; do not invent certification or outside endorsement.
Separate experience from platform rules
State conditions for project guidance. Link platform capabilities to official documentation and retain the access date. Preserve the nature of client evidence without presenting it as independent verification.
Connect articles with service pages
The guide organises questions and reading paths, articles explain methods, and service pages define scope and delivery. Give each article one primary home rather than copying its body into more pages.
Review after a change
Save previous versions, sources and reasons. Check both languages, links, visible content and structured data. Update affected rules when platforms change rather than bulk-refreshing dates.
Maintenance and rule sources
