Shopify AR Across Devices: Failure Handling and Product-Page Fallback

Published: Edited by WESWOO

Shopify AR acceptance should test web model display, device AR launch and the ordinary product page after failure separately. A model opening on one phone does not establish the same experience on every device, browser or in-app page. Customers should still be able to view images, select a product and continue shopping when AR fails.

Separate model display from AR launch

Shopify's product-media guidance requires a theme supporting models and videos, or theme changes that add media support. The developer guide describes Shopify-XR paths for AR Quick Look in iOS Safari and Android Scene Viewer. This does not establish virtual try-on on every browser, device or product.

Record the product-model relationship, load result and AR entry method. Furniture placement, general model viewing and body or face try-on are different tasks. Displaying a model is not evidence that try-on has been implemented.

Record devices by failure type

SituationObservationWeb fallback requirement
Model fails to loadProduct, resource and actual error stateProduct images and description remain available
AR cannot launchDevice, system, browser and entry pointShopping is not blocked; available path is explained
Customer refuses permission or exitsPage remains operableOrdinary product page and selection remain
Page opens inside another appModel and button availabilityA way to continue on the ordinary web
Customer returns and clicks againProduct, quantity and interface consistencyNo duplicate add-to-cart or blank overlay

Record passed, failed and untested states. The absence of an error message is not success. This is an acceptance checklist; compatibility requires actual device testing.

Keep ordinary product shopping available

Retain images, dimensions and product descriptions near the AR entry point. Do not make the model the only source of key specifications. A failure message should explain what remains possible. After returning, check product and variant selection, usable controls and mobile layout.

Check interaction conflicts between the model container and media navigation. Rotating a model should not trigger unrelated actions, and returning to images should not leave an obstructing layer.

Document launch boundaries and retests

Deliver the device and browser list, failure samples, fallback screenshots and known limits. After changing a theme, model or entry point, retest affected pages rather than extending old results to untested configurations. Keeping product information and the purchase path usable when AR is unavailable is the objective of this fallback check.

FAQ

Does displaying a web model mean AR has passed?

No. Test model loading and device AR launch separately, recording the actual device and browser.

Should refusing permission prevent a purchase?

AR failure should not block ordinary shopping. Keep images, specifications, product selection and usable web controls available.

Does model support mean every virtual try-on is supported?

No. General models, spatial placement and body try-on have different requirements. Confirm implementation and compatibility separately.
