A Shopify theme handover should identify the template behind each page, merchant-owned settings, developer-owned code, and the checks needed to change or restore it. A file list without inputs, data sources and editing boundaries still leaves the next team guessing about impact.
Map page composition to file responsibilities
Shopify's theme architecture documentation distinguishes layouts, templates, sections, snippets, assets and configuration. Complete this handover map for the actual theme; a directory's existence does not prove a feature is implemented.
| Component | Handover focus | What maintainers need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Shared frame and page entry points | Changes that affect several pages |
| Template | Resource type and page composition | Which resource uses which template |
| Section | Reusable block and settings | Merchant edits and missing-data behavior |
| Snippet | Reusable Liquid fragment | Call sites, inputs and output dependencies |
| Assets | Styles, scripts and static files | Loading location and applicable pages |
| Config and locales | Settings definitions and interface text | Defaults, translation ownership and fallback |
Separate merchant settings from code
The JSON template guide describes section and settings data that merchants can edit. A JSON data file is not a place for Liquid logic. Explain each editable field, allowed empty values and visible effects so merchants understand the reach of a setting change.
For every snippet, document its callers, required inputs and interface output. Shopify's snippet documentation explains render and named parameters. Do not rely on a developer remembering the calling context. Shopify theme feature development and acceptance can then turn a requested change into explicit interaction and data conditions.
Test missing states using real page samples
In a theme copy, select pages using different templates and check missing images, long titles, absent options, missing translations and removed sections. Record the product or collection sample, template, expected result and screenshot. A complete homepage screenshot is insufficient evidence for all page types.
Check navigation, forms, keyboard use and mobile layout too. If loading cost is a concern, pass the particular page, resource and measurement conditions to Shopify theme performance iteration. An architecture handover cannot guarantee speed or conversion improvements.
Deliver a maintainable version
Include the responsibility map, settings guide, page checks, external dependencies and known limitations. Tie the candidate theme to the published version and document the release operation and recoverable version. After restoration, check settings, assets and key pages rather than merely confirming that files were copied. Assign ongoing owners for code and merchant settings, including review of changes that combine both.
FAQ
Is a theme archive enough for handover?
No. Maintainers need page-to-template mapping, settings meanings, dependencies, test records and restoration instructions to assess change impact.
Are JSON templates and snippets interchangeable?
They serve different roles. JSON templates describe section composition; snippets are reusable Liquid fragments. Document settings and code inputs separately.
Does clear architecture mean performance has passed?
No. Loading cost requires checks on actual pages under stated measurement conditions. Handover documents do not replace those tests.
