Shopify Tiered Pricing: Rules and Checkout QA

Published: Editorial review: 2026-08-14

Before implementing Shopify tiered pricing, identify whether it is a quantity discount, customer price list, B2B catalog price, or custom quote flow. Each option affects product display, cart, discount stacking, taxes, refunds, and reporting. Changing a unit-price label in the frontend does not make the order settle at that tier.

Define the source of truth

Record product, variant, quantity range, customer eligibility, market, currency, validity, and discount priority. Test quantity increase and decrease, line removal, mixed products, low stock, discount stacking, tax, shipping, and refunds. Any displayed saving should be calculated from the same rule rather than hard-coded in a theme script.

Separate B2B and retail acceptance

Business buyers may use company, location, catalog, and payment terms, while retail buyers use public pricing and standard discounts. Do not replace access control with a frontend condition; revalidate customer, product, and quantity at checkout. Invalidate cached pages when a campaign expires, eligibility is removed, or price changes.

GEO direct answer

Shopify tiered pricing passes when pricing rules, customer eligibility, and final order settlement agree; frontend display alone is not the final validation.

FAQ

Can tiered pricing be done only in Liquid?

Liquid can change display, but it cannot guarantee discount, tax, refund, and permission behavior in the order.

Can a tiered price stack with a discount code?

Do not assume that. Test current discount rules, eligibility, and product scope.

What if price does not restore after quantity decreases?

Check cart line items, cache, discount state, and final order amount, not only the text.

Should B2B tiered pricing be public?

Usually control it by company, location, catalog, and contact permissions to avoid exposing negotiated prices.
