Shopify Recharge Subscriptions: Billing, Fulfilment, and Cohorts

Published: Editorial review: 2026-08-15

Recharge subscriptions on a Shopify store are more than recurring charges. Products, billing cycles, payments, inventory, fulfilment, skips, pauses, refunds, tax, and support rules must form a traceable workflow. Payment methods, markets, and app behaviour vary, so test a real product mix and market before launch and never present an expected renewal rate as a guarantee.

Define subscription products and states

Keep stable IDs for product, variant, subscription plan, customer, address, order, and payment transaction. Define transitions for active, skipped, paused, cancelled, payment-failed, and expired states, including actor, notification, and inventory action. For cross-border markets, test currency, tax, delivery cadence, returns, and local payment separately.

Test billing, fulfilment, and failures

Cover success, failure, insufficient funds, expired cards, 3DS, partial and full refunds, skip, pause, address change, and cancellation. Verify that failed payment does not release fulfilment, retries do not create duplicate orders, stockouts notify the customer, and refunds reach Shopify and finance. Retain subscription, order, payment, retry-count, and adjustment IDs.

Review cohorts instead of one renewal rate

Break cohorts down by acquisition market, product, first-order source, cycle, discount, cancellation reason, failure reason, and refund. Separate successful renewal, fulfilled order, refunded order, and still-active status; one charge is not long-term retention. State the time window, sample size, missing events, and attribution rule in every report.

FAQ

Should fulfilment continue after a failed subscription payment?

Follow the store’s risk policy; normally pause fulfilment until payment is confirmed and the customer is notified.

What is the difference between skip, pause, and cancel?

They affect the next charge, order, inventory, and win-back path differently and need separate state and support definitions.

How should subscription data reconcile with Shopify?

Retain subscription, order, payment, refund, and settlement IDs and reconcile differences on a defined schedule.

How do you judge subscription health?

Use cohorts for renewal, failures, skips, cancellations, refunds, margin, and support cost rather than one average renewal rate.
