Calculating Shopify Customer Value: Cohorts, Observation Periods and Costs

Published: Editorial review: 2026-10-03

Start Shopify customer lifetime value analysis by stating whether it describes observed customer value or forecasts the future. For operational decisions, group customers by first purchase and compare income and costs over equal observation periods. That is easier to audit than multiplying order value by an unexplained repeat-purchase assumption.

Fix the customer, time and amount definitions

Record identity rules, the first qualifying purchase, the cutoff date and eligible orders for each cohort. Do not treat test data, duplicate records or unpaid orders as completed customer contribution. State how cancellations and refunds are handled and whether taxes, shipping and currency conversion are included.

Check revenue fields against Shopify sales-report definitions, then document your chosen analytical scope. Identical field names do not establish identical filters across tools; use “Shopify analytics tool selection and metric reconciliation” for the comparison process.

Calculate value over the observation period

The following are suggested analytical definitions, not a Shopify default LTV field or results from a particular merchant. For a first-purchase cohort, let N be the number of customers, R the net revenue within the chosen period, and C the included contribution costs:

  • Observed revenue value = R / N.
  • Observed contribution value = (R - C) / N.

Document the contents of C, such as product costs, payment processing, fulfillment subsidies and support. Choose the scope for the decision. Show acquisition costs separately if appropriate, avoiding a deduction inside C followed by another deduction in the comparison. Keep customer counts, order counts and product-line counts distinct.

CheckRule to fixMisreading if omitted
CohortFirst-purchase period and identity ruleOne person counted more than once
ObservationEqual starting point and elapsed windowOlder customers have more time to accumulate revenue
RevenueRefund, cancellation, currency and shipping scopeSales, receipts and profit become interchangeable
CostsCategories and allocationHigher revenue is assumed to mean higher contribution

Compare cohorts at equivalent maturity

Use the same age since first purchase or equivalent observed duration to compare channels, markets and product groups. Do not compare a newly recorded cohort's total directly with a long-observed cohort. Mark incomplete observation instead of inserting zero to fill a chart.

For subscriptions, retain first purchases, successful renewals, failures, cancellations and refunds separately. “Shopify membership and subscription renewal and exit design” explains the operational distinctions. Identify repeat purchases and continued subscriptions in the underlying records before combining them.

Use the result for a defined action

Comparable observed values can help investigate support costs in a customer group, fulfillment costs in a market, or repeat purchasing from a channel. Resolve data differences before selecting the action. Present forecasts separately with a horizon, assumptions and uncertainty. A future estimate is not money already earned and does not establish a marketing return.

FAQ

Can average order value times repeat purchases be used as LTV?

It can be a simplified model with stated assumptions, but the period, customer definition, refunds and cost scope must be explained. Keep the observed result calculated from actual orders alongside it.

Why do revenue and contribution LTV differ?

Revenue value describes the selected income. Contribution value deducts the explicitly included costs. Select the basis for the decision and avoid subtracting a cost twice.

Does a lower value for a new cohort prove the channel is poor?

First check equal observation length, refund updates, identity rules and eligible orders. An immature cohort's accumulated total is not directly comparable with a mature one.
