Shopify and Klaviyo: An Email Automation Setup Guide for DTC Brands

Published: Editorial review: 2026-08-13

The short answer: establish permission and event quality before switching flows on

A reliable Shopify–Klaviyo program begins with account and sending-domain ownership, channel-specific consent rules, and a tested official integration. Only after events and profile properties are trustworthy should the team build segments and activate a small number of essential flows. Installing an application and enabling every library template at once is not a strategy: missing events, weak purchaser exclusions, or simultaneous Shopify and Klaviyo abandonment messages can automate a poor customer experience.

Klaviyo's current Shopify data reference documents customer, catalogue, order, and behavioral data available through the integration. It also distinguishes Klaviyo's Checkout Started event from Shopify's Abandoned Checkout. The integration is a data pipe; it does not decide who has marketing permission, whether a message is useful, or whether platform-attributed revenue represents incremental demand.

1. Set up ownership, sending, and consent

The brand should own the Klaviyo account, use role-appropriate access, configure a recognizable From identity and monitored Reply-to address, authenticate the sending domain, and expose a working unsubscribe path. A new or dormant sending identity should build reputation carefully; importing every historical address and immediately broadcasting to it creates both permission and deliverability risk. Imported records need evidence of subscription, suppression hygiene, and removal of invalid or unsuitable addresses.

Permission is channel specific. Email consent is not automatically SMS or WhatsApp consent, and a transactional relationship is not blanket marketing permission. Klaviyo's profile-consent documentation distinguishes subscribed, unsubscribed, suppressed, and never-subscribed states and records subscription events by channel. For protected regions, counsel should review language, affirmative action, double opt-in where appropriate, proof retention, and withdrawal. Klaviyo's GDPR consent guide is educational and likewise recommends legal review.

International brands should document market, language, currency, and consent treatment before building journeys. WESWOO's international ecommerce services and case-study library can support planning, but neither replaces merchant-specific legal and system validation.

2. Connect Shopify and prove the event stream

Connect the correct store through Klaviyo's official Shopify integration. Review the historical-sync scope, catalogue, profiles, and order metrics. Enable onsite tracking, the Klaviyo app embed, and behavioral-event options only as needed. Klaviyo's current Added to Cart troubleshooting guide explains that Shopify Added to Cart tracking can be enabled through the integration's behavioral-event setting and is collected through a Shopify Server Pixel; Viewed Product also depends on the applicable app embed and setting. A customized quick-add, unusual theme, or headless frontend still needs its own test.

Do not treat similarly named metrics as interchangeable. In the Shopify integration, Checkout Started generally occurs after the shopper provides an email during checkout and can include product information and a return-to-checkout URL. It is not every anonymous cart, and it differs from Shopify's abandonment metric. Run a test profile through product view, add to cart, checkout start, purchase, cancellation, and refund. On the profile timeline, confirm order, product, currency, language, market, and status properties rather than accepting an event name alone.

At minimum, assess Viewed Product, Added to Cart, Checkout Started, Placed Order, Ordered Product, Fulfilled Order, cancellation and refund signals, plus any custom event the program will actually use. Repair an unreliable event source instead of hiding the defect with a broad list condition.

3. Build explainable lists and dynamic segments

The main marketable audience should be grounded in valid subscription status, not “anyone with an email in Shopify.” Dynamic segments can express engagement, first or repeat purchase, category affinity, market, language, value range, and recency, with a documented default when a field is missing. Do not collect sensitive or excessive properties merely because finer segmentation is technically possible.

A practical initial segment set includes new subscribers without a purchase, recently engaged subscribers, first-time buyers, repeat buyers, purchasers by meaningful category, customers approaching a genuine repurchase or churn window, recipients already exposed to high frequency, and suppressed people such as unsubscribers, hard bounces, and complainers. Market and language should come from dependable fields rather than a permanent preference inferred from one IP address or page view.

If product information remains incomplete, fix the destination before relying on email to compensate. WESWOO's Shopify product-page guide provides a structured content checklist for specifications, choice, delivery, and returns.

4. Launch four foundational flows first

Welcome

Trigger on valid subscription, not profile creation alone. The first message should deliver the promised benefit; subsequent messages can introduce the brand, core category, choice guidance, and support. Any incentive needs terms, expiry, market coverage, and an exclusion when it is no longer appropriate after purchase.

Cart or checkout abandonment

Choose a proven Checkout Started or, where suitable, Added to Cart trigger. Klaviyo's abandoned-cart flow guide recommends a flow filter that requires Placed Order zero times since entering the flow, preventing buyers from receiving later reminders. It also discusses limiting repeated re-entry. If Shopify's own recovery notification is active, deliberately choose which system will send rather than allowing both.

Post-purchase

Branch by product and fulfillment stage to deliver preparation, installation, care, review, or replenishment help. Order confirmations and shipping messages are transactional communications; do not silently apply the same permission assumptions to promotional content. Refunds, cancellations, risky orders, and open support cases should exit or take an appropriate branch.

Win-back

Define likely lapse from a real purchase cycle rather than copying a generic 30-, 60-, or 90-day delay. Lead with useful help, education, or relevant product news before assuming a discount is required. Apply frequency limits and exclude recent buyers or customers in an active service issue.

5. Test every message, stage activation, and interpret attribution carefully

Create controlled profiles for each flow and test trigger, profile and flow filters, delay, split logic, language, currency, product image, dynamic URL, promotion, UTM parameters, unsubscribe, and mobile rendering. Begin with messages in Draft or Manual status, inspect who qualifies, and move individual messages live in stages. Monitor delivery, bounce, complaint, unsubscribe, click, purchase, broken dynamic content, and unusual entry volume after launch.

Klaviyo's message-attribution explanation uses defined attribution models and windows. Attributed revenue means a conversion was associated with a message under those rules; it is not the same as revenue that would disappear if the message had not been sent. Budget decisions should also use Shopify orders, consistent UTM and GA4 reporting, and holdout or controlled testing where practical. WESWOO's Shopify GA4 setup guide provides the supporting measurement baseline.

Launch checklist

  • [ ] Brand-controlled account, authenticated sending domain, From identity, and Reply-to are verified.
  • [ ] Consent source and withdrawal are handled separately for email, SMS, and other channels.
  • [ ] Test profiles show correct Shopify events, products, orders, currencies, and markets.
  • [ ] Shopify and Klaviyo will not send duplicate abandonment messages.
  • [ ] Every flow excludes purchasers, suppressions, over-frequency, and inappropriate order states.
  • [ ] Dynamic content, languages, currencies, links, and mobile rendering pass message-level QA.
  • [ ] Stakeholders understand that platform attribution is not the same as incremental lift.

Frequently asked questions

Can we switch on all Klaviyo flows immediately after installing the Shopify app?

That is not advisable. Validate permission, data, and exclusions first, then stage a small set of welcome, abandonment, post-purchase, and win-back messages. A library template is only a starting structure.

Can every Shopify customer with an email receive marketing?

No such assumption should be made. Eligibility depends on demonstrable channel consent, applicable law, and brand policy. Email and SMS permission must be handled separately.

Should an abandonment flow use Checkout Started or Added to Cart?

Choose according to reliable event coverage and the intended lifecycle stage. Checkout Started usually has stronger identity; Added to Cart reaches earlier behavior but depends on tracking and may not identify an anonymous visitor. Both need purchase exclusions.

Why did a customer receive abandonment email after ordering?

Check whether Placed Order synced in time, whether the flow requires zero purchases since entry, whether the delay is sensible, and whether Shopify and Klaviyo are both sending recovery messages.

Is Klaviyo-attributed revenue the incremental value of email?

No. It is revenue associated under Klaviyo's model and lookback window. Incrementality requires additional evidence such as controlled comparisons and consistent cross-platform measurement.
