How to Measure Shopify LTV: Cohorts, Margin, and Retention

Published: Editorial review: 2026-08-19

Shopify LTV is not a “true value” produced by dividing historical revenue by customers. A cross-border store should define customer, order, refund, margin, and observation window, then segment by market, first product, channel, and repurchase cycle. LTV supports retention and budget decisions; it should not guide spend without margin and cash-flow context.

Set one measurement definition

Record customer ID, first-order date, net order value, refunds, discounts, delivery, payment fees, product cost, acquisition cost, and repurchase window. State tax treatment, cancelled orders, and exchange-rate timing. Do not compare LTV values built with different definitions.

SegmentQuestion
MarketWhich markets differ in repeat and refund structure?
First productWhich products lead to later orders?
ChannelDoes acquisition cost match payback?
Customer typeShould new, subscription, and B2B be separate?
TimeAre 30-, 90-, and 180-day cohorts comparable?

Turn LTV into action

Read contribution-margin LTV with CAC, stock, refunds, and cash recovery. Use cohorts rather than a sitewide average. Mark small samples and new markets as uncertain, and do not turn correlation into causation. Validate email, membership, and support changes with experiments and profit review.

FAQ

Is LTV the same as historical customer spend?

Not necessarily. Define net value, refunds, costs, and the window first.

Can a sitewide average LTV set ad budgets?

It is risky; segment by market, channel, product, and cohort.

What if a new market has little data?

Mark uncertainty and combine margin, cash flow, and qualitative evidence.

How often should LTV be updated?

Follow the business cycle with a fixed definition and version record.

How can correlation be separated from causation?

Record test windows, controls, external events, and stop rules.
