Shopify Payments for a Hong Kong Corporation: First Setup and Bank Connection

Published: Editorial review: 2026-10-04

For a Hong Kong Corporation opening Shopify Payments for the first time, complete the business and personal verification process before connecting the first payout bank account. Treat these as two separate outcomes: submitting an application records evidence for review; saving a bank account after verification configures where future payouts can go. Shopify's account setup procedure

This guide covers first activation in the desktop Shopify admin for a Hong Kong business, using Corporation as the worked business type. Sources were checked on 2026-10-04. The bank-number example below illustrates the official input format; no application, bank connection or payment was executed. Existing merchants changing providers or replacing a payout bank need a different procedure.

Establish the company and the people behind the application

Eligibility depends on the business location, activity and applicable requirements. A customer's location does not make the merchant eligible. Start with the supported-country requirements and Shopify Payments eligibility rules, then use the Hong Kong requirements for this application.

Read the status / 法律地位 on the actual business registration certificate:

  • If it identifies the business as body corporate, body corp, corp or the specified company forms, select Corporation. A company with one shareholder owning 100% is still Corporation.
  • Someone without a Hong Kong BRN who selects Individual must personally live in Hong Kong.
  • A person living in mainland China with a Hong Kong BRN can apply under the actual eligible business structure. Provide the true residential address in China and a valid passport for identity verification; a Chinese national ID card or driver's licence is not a substitute for that passport requirement.

These branches follow the Hong Kong business-type and residence requirements.

Keep the Shopify store owner and the account representative separate. The store owner performs activation. For a Corporation, the representative must be a beneficial owner or an executive with decision-making power; the representative does not have to be the store owner. These roles determine who can operate the admin and whose personal evidence belongs in the application. Activation authority and account representative, Corporation requirements

Prepare the following evidence before entering the form:

ObjectInformation for the Corporation applicationMatch it against
CompanyRegistered legal name, BRN, business telephone and physical Hong Kong business addressThe registration record and supporting business document; preserve case, punctuation and symbols
RepresentativeLegal name, date of birth, job title, identification number, active email, telephone, residential address and equity percentage when applicableThe person's government documentation; a company BRN does not replace personal identity evidence
Other peopleOther beneficial owners and directors: names, dates of birth and home addressesTheir government records; failed automatic verification can require photo ID or address evidence
Payout bankA Hong Kong HKD-denominated checking account with the company as beneficiaryThe actual bank account's country, currency, type and business beneficiary

These are the Hong Kong Corporation fields and bank conditions. Corporation and Partnership use a business bank account in the business name; do not borrow the personal-account rule for Individual or Sole proprietorship.

Set the store currency and enable the owner's security first

Choose the store currency before the first sale. Shopify directs merchants who need to change it after the first sale to Shopify Support. The HKD condition above refers to the payout bank account; it does not make HKD the only possible store currency. Store currency before activation

The owner also needs two-step authentication to use Shopify Payments. Without it, payouts might be placed on hold. Enable the security control rather than removing it to simplify a sign-in or redirect. Shopify Payments two-step authentication requirement

Submit the first application, then record the review state

Follow the current desktop activation sequence:

  1. As the store owner, open Settings > Payments and click Activate Shopify Payments. If the control is absent, check the logged-in role and actual business eligibility before proceeding; do not use an invented address to manufacture eligibility.
  2. Enter the requested personal, address and identification information, then click Next. Continue with the business information requested by the form.
  3. Enter the telephone number to appear on the customer's bank statement, then click Next.
  4. Review Business type and Store details. Compare the legal type, company name and address with the prepared records, then click Confirm.
  5. Click Submit for verification. Record the submission time and the review or document request actually displayed in the admin.

The useful handoff at this point is “submitted, with this outstanding review state.” A submitted application is not evidence that verification succeeded. If the admin asks for documents, follow that request before moving to the bank connection stage.

Resolve a document request against the original records

Upload requested evidence through the secure banners in the Shopify admin. Documents sent in email or support chat cannot complete this verification. Photograph physical originals in colour, clearly, with all four borders and every detail visible. For digitally issued documents, provide the complete original PDF without alterations. Scans, photocopies, screenshots, cropped images and redacted documents do not meet those requirements. Secure uploads and document requirements

Work from the actual rejection reason:

  • Company information does not match: compare the registered name, BRN and Hong Kong address character by character. Correct the account information to match the genuine record; provide the requested business document if automatic verification fails.
  • A person's name, date of birth or address differs: check the corresponding person's government document, not another owner's record. Correct the field or submit the matching evidence requested by the upload page.
  • The file is unreadable, cropped or altered: replace it with an acceptable original photo or original digital PDF.
  • The upload or update limit has been reached: contact Shopify Support for further changes or document submission instead of repeatedly changing the business type.

The first company check follows the Hong Kong verification guidance; the remaining rejection and escalation paths are in Shopify's document verification procedure. While verification is actively requested, the Hong Kong guidance allows corrections from the verification page together with the requested documents.

Keep the review status as it stands. An internal note such as “registered address corrected to match evidence; resubmitted; response pending” is a handoff record, not an approval result. Store sensitive originals in the formal submission channel and use redacted references in ordinary team notes.

After verification, connect the company's first bank account

Once the Shopify Payments account is verified, open Settings > Payments, click Connect a bank account, enter the bank details and click Save. First payout bank connection

The account must meet the Hong Kong conditions: HKD checking with a Hong Kong bank, and the company name as beneficiary for Corporation. Savings accounts, checking accounts accepting only wire transfers, flex-currency accounts and money-transfer services that mimic bank accounts are unsupported types. Non-Shopify virtual accounts are supported, but Shopify warns of more payout failures; they are not all categorically prohibited. Ask the bank whether the account accepts the required regional transfer type. Hong Kong payout account requirements

For the official combined-string example 004-406-789789-89, split the input as follows:

InputFormat exampleCheck before Save
Bank code004Three digits in the bank-code field
Branch code406Three digits in the branch-code field
Account number78978989Six to nine digits, excluding the branch code

This demonstrates parsing only; it does not identify a real payout account. If the bank is Citibank, use its eight-digit account number for the payout transfer system, not its ten-digit version. Bank-number troubleshooting

If saving fails, first check whether the bank code, branch code and account number were placed in separate fields. Then check account length, whether the branch was repeated inside the account number, the actual HKD checking type and the company beneficiary. A correctly split number cannot make an unsuitable account eligible. After Save, inspect the account information and outstanding prompts actually shown by the admin.

Hand the configured account to payment acceptance

Leave a redacted record of the legal business type, current verification state, bank-configuration result, unresolved prompt and responsible person. This is a suggested operational handoff, not a promise that the admin exposes a particular status field.

Provider choice and cost comparison belong to the card-payment provider selection guide. After configuration, arrange the separate payment, refund and payout acceptance procedure. A bank configuration saved in the admin is not a completed purchase or confirmed money in the bank.
