Build a migration inventory matching business objects to source systems
Shopify Plus data migration should begin with an inventory of the existing business rather than exporting one large table. Register products, variants, customers, orders, inventory locations, discounts, media, and pages individually: where each field lives, who owns it, whether it is still changing, and which target-store app or interface receives it. Define unique matching rules for SKUs, customer emails, order numbers, and product handles; clean duplicates, invalid addresses, inactive products, and unused tags first. Check interfaces, account eligibility, and data responsibility separately for systems such as SAP and Salesforce and payment services such as PayPal and Stripe. Naming a platform in a solution does not connect it automatically.
Migrate in batches and validate samples first
Back up source data first. Import small samples by object into a test store and check variants, images, prices, inventory locations, customer fields, and relationships before defining production batches. Shopify product CSV supports particular product fields, while media must meet requirements such as accessible links. Reconcile inventory by location using the inventory CSV documentation. Customer CSV cannot import passwords from the old system and does not replace order-history migration; see the customer import guide. Orders require an appropriate migration app or API path. Migration sequence, importable fields, and app capabilities differ: check each object against the official migration guide and product import documentation before sample acceptance. If password-based customer accounts remain in use, arrange new-password notifications. For new customer accounts using emailed verification codes, test login and order access (new customer-account login).
The field-mapping table should record old values, new values, conversion rules, null handling, and sample records. If customer-address formats, product-option names, or inventory-location codes mean different things in the two systems, define the conversion and verify it against actual orders first. Check accessible links and page presentation for images, manuals, and other media. Retain source snapshots before migration and batch records after import to locate duplicates, omissions, and formatting errors.
Control incremental data and writes during the cutover window
After choosing the cutover time, record the last full export and plan how to reconcile incremental orders, inventory, and customer updates. Business, warehouse, and system owners should jointly decide which backend operations require a brief freeze. For objects that cannot be frozen, assign an incremental source and conflict rules. Before production import, record every batch file, row count, failed rows, and owner; afterward compare totals and sampled details between the source and target store. Focus on duplicate orders, SKU mapping, locations, tax and discount fields, and payment-service availability in the target markets. A connected interface is not end-to-end acceptance.
The migration schedule should include app configuration and staff training, not only data transfer. Assign an owner, estimated duration, acceptance evidence, and dependencies to each step. Unfinished payment-account reviews, warehouse stocktakes, or ERP field changes should be launch gates. Cross-border brands should test carts and checkout in each market, checking language, displayed currency, shipping coverage, and refunds. Multilingual content and AI recommendations require configuration, apps, or custom solutions; choosing Plus does not generate them automatically.
Map old URLs to new URLs individually, add necessary redirects, and sample product, collection, and content entry points. Before launch, check DNS, confirmation emails, and tracking configuration. Before bulk-importing historical orders, confirm staff new-order notification settings and restore required notifications afterward. Assign separate owners and metrics to post-cutover localized content, AI-personalized recommendations, and sustainable packaging and delivery optimization (Plus launch and incremental migration checklist).
If migrating from Squarespace also involves domain or business-email continuity, use the separate website, domain, and business-email handover (Chinese-language) to check mail services and sending/receiving results. Completing the website and old-URL cutover does not establish that the inquiry mailbox is connected.
Validate business scenarios and prepare rollback arrangements
Acceptance should cover new and existing customers, product pages in different regions, checkout and payment, orders reaching the ERP, stock deductions, shipment tracking, refunds, and support inquiries. When comparing standard Shopify, Plus, Magento, and BigCommerce, calculate customization and system-integration needs. Existing self-hosted Magento projects also require server operations; Shopify-hosted stores need owners for apps, content, and daily operations. Platform labels alone do not establish cost or performance. Shopify Plus is particularly suited to brands with annual revenue above one million US dollars, such as fashion or electronics businesses, and can address post-migration data consistency, inventory management, and marketing efficiency. Revenue describes business positioning; choose Plus according to specific features, integrations, and support needs. Greater operational automation can reduce labor costs by more than 30% while accelerating global market penetration and revenue growth.
The migration cases report that H&M localized multilingual websites for Europe and the United States after moving to Shopify Plus, increasing sales by 40%; Samsung connected its ERP through APIs, improving supply-chain efficiency and reducing order-processing time by 50%. Those results belong to their respective brand cases. Retail and B2B migration projects should review their own business metrics separately. Before launch, define how failed batches will be rerun, when the old site becomes read-only, who resolves order or inventory discrepancies, and what triggers rollback. Complete the cutover handover only after key business paths pass sampling and reconciliation.
If the migration also involves business customers, dedicated catalogs or an ERP, review the B2B and multisystem migration scope when discussing field mapping, incremental cutover, order reconciliation and rollback handover. A retail migration should still define its scope around its own objects and business paths.
