Shopify Promotions: Discounts, Refunds, and Cross-Border Margin

Published: Editorial review: 2026-08-16

Shopify promotions should not maximise discount size. Product, market, customer eligibility, stock, payment, refunds, and margin rules must agree. A cross-border store should include discount, tax, delivery, commission, refund, and exchange-rate effects in one calculation rather than tracking order count alone.

Define promotion boundaries

Record products, markets, customer groups, dates, currency, minimum, stacking, stock, delivery, returns, and codes. Test guests and logged-in users, reuse, cross-market, partial refunds, cancellations, expiry, and concurrent campaigns. Every promotion needs owner, approval, and stop condition.

Review net margin and experience

Link order, discount, tax, payment, delivery, refund, commission, and support cost to one order ID. Compare net revenue, margin, returns, AOV, inventory turn, and new versus returning customers; discounted GMV is not profit. After a campaign, clean codes, landing pages, structured data, and internal links.

FAQ

Can codes stack with automatic discounts?

Test explicit rules so storefront and checkout prices agree.

How should refunds handle discounts?

Define partial and full refund, discount recovery, points, and commission treatment.

What should be cleaned after a campaign?

Codes, collections, landing pages, ads, structured data, internal links, and automation.
