LTV is not one universal formula, and it is not total sales divided by customer count. A cross-border Shopify model must state the time window, revenue or margin basis, treatment of refunds and discounts, currency conversion, market, and decision the model supports. Shopify provides order, customer, and reporting data, but the result still needs reconciliation with finance, advertising, fulfillment, and support data.
1. Fix the accounting definition first
Separate revenue LTV, contribution-margin LTV, and payback period. Revenue may mean net customer payments in a defined window; contribution margin subtracts product cost, payment fees, fulfillment, refunds, and discounts. For international comparisons, record order currency, payout currency, FX treatment, taxes, and duties. Do not compare tax-inclusive revenue with a tax-exclusive acquisition cost without documenting the difference.
2. Use cohorts instead of one average
Group customers by first market, acquisition source, first product, subscription status, and first-order month. Review 30-, 60-, and 90-day repeat purchase, refund, support, and margin behavior. For new customers, use mature cohorts or conservative forecasts and label every assumption. LTV:CAC is a decision tool, not a platform guarantee.
| Question | Required data | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Who is valuable? | Market, channel, product, first-order month | Budget allocation |
| Why do customers leave? | Refund, delivery, quality, support | Product and operations |
| Is value profitable? | Margin, fulfillment, payment, FX | Payback and expansion |
3. Build a traceable data chain
Align Shopify orders with GA4, ad platforms, CRM, or support data using order ID, customer ID, UTM parameters, and a declared window. Handle duplicate identities, guest-to-account changes, cancellations, refunds, partial returns, and multi-currency orders. Version every model change with an owner, population, window, and assumption. Attributed revenue is not automatically incremental revenue.
FAQ
Should LTV use revenue or profit?
Either can be valid when named clearly. Budget and expansion decisions usually need a contribution-margin view.
What if a store has too little repeat-purchase data?
Report observed cohorts first. Put forecasts in a separate section with assumptions and ranges rather than presenting an industry average as store evidence.
How should different currencies be compared?
Record order currency, payout currency, FX method, date, and the finance-approved reporting currency.
Can LTV alone set an advertising budget?
No. Add marginal margin, cash payback, inventory, returns, channel incrementality, and test evidence.
