Changing a Shopify theme, domain, or store structure looks like three separate tasks, but each can affect URLs, canonical tags, scripts, orders, email, and crawling. A cross-border store should version each change, test in a preview or low-risk window, and coordinate DNS, advertising, and support with the cutover.
A theme change is not a rebuild
Duplicate the current theme and record version, app blocks, pixels, checkout extensions, menus, templates, and custom code. Use real products to test home, collections, product, cart, search, mobile, and policy pages. Compare structured data, alt text, performance, focus, and form errors. Avoid changing the theme and installing a large app set at the same time.
Domain and URL mapping
Inventory high-traffic, linked, product, and article URLs on the old domain and create one-to-one 301 mappings. Check canonical, sitemap, hreflang, images, email links, and third-party references. Do not send every old path to the home page or delete old evidence before DNS cutover.
Store merge boundaries
Define master ownership for products, SKUs, customers, orders, discounts, inventory, and markets. Duplicated customers, the same SKU with different specifications, and order-number conflicts need explicit rules. Import counts alone do not prove a successful merge; payments, tax, support, returns, and analytics require end-to-end testing.

FAQ
Can changing a theme affect SEO?
Yes. Templates, titles, canonical tags, structured data, internal links, speed, and app scripts need before-and-after checks.
How long should the old domain remain active?
Keep it until important URLs, links, support, and organic traffic are stable and redirects and exports are monitored.
Can two stores share one order-number sequence after a merge?
Do not assume so. Define source identifiers, conflict rules, and support mappings and test a small sample.
Why not redirect every old URL to the home page?
It loses user intent and SEO relationships. Valuable old paths should point to the most relevant new page.
When is DNS cutover safe?
After theme, URL, payment, inventory, email, support, analytics, and rollback tests pass.
